This lot features a Luke Appling autographed 16x20 lithograph limited edition #729/800. (JSA) Luke Appling was a shortstop for the Chicago White Sox from 1930 to 1950, and he spent a brief time in 1951 as a player-manager. Appling was a seven-time All-Star, two-time batting champion, and led the league in on-base percentage three times. He was known for his excellent contact hitting and was a tough out, often refusing to swing at pitches outside the strike zone. Appling finished his career with a .310 batting average and 2,749 hits, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964. Off the field, he was also known for his wit and sense of humor, often engaging in practical jokes with teammates.
